BITES NEARBY: Romantic Dinners for Two

Where to snag a last-minute table and celebrate with your sweetheart.

Valentine's Day has a way of sneaking up on a person. Sure, everyone knows it's Feb. 14 and that it's supposed to be the most romantic night of the year for lovebirds. But restaurants book up weeks in advance, leaving procrastinators or simply busy people wondering how they can pass off an Extra Value Meal as romantic. Luckily, there are still a few great options around town.

Nowhere is more romantic than Paris, and Kirkland just happens to have a brand new Parisian bistro down the street at Carillon Point. Le Grand Bistro Americain serves all the urban French classics like steak frites, bouillabaise, house-made charcuterie and a sexy plate of oysters. Reservations are still available from 5-6:30 and after 7:30 p.m. and can be made online or by calling 425-828-7778.

In the heart of downtown Kirkland with sweeping views of Hunts Point and even the Seattle skyline, Anthony's Homeport claims they have openings throughout the evening. The menu is dominated by seafood from fresh local mussels to Australian lobster tail. A small selection of steaks are available for land-based cuisine preferences. For reservations, call 425-822-0225.

For a seasonal Northwest style celebration, give Trellis a call. A wide range of items are available on its three-course Prix Fixe Valentine's menu. From wild-foraged mushroom soup to venison with berry gastrique and the signature lemon sage flan, Trellis has a little something for everyone. Unfortunately, not many spots remain. Expect to eat very early (before 4:30 p.m.) or very late (after 9 p.m.) if you're just now picking up the phone to call 425-284-5900 to snag a last-minute table.

Hopefully, one of these suggestions will save your romantic bacon. But if you strike out, there's always a great bottle of wine at the grocery store. And don't forget a box of Fran's Gray Salt Caramels available at Metropolitan Market or PCC.
