That's cool, Kathi, Jennifer and Jim, it's awesome to be able to see native wildlife inside…Read More Kirkland! I am adding another shot of the three deer.

Kathi, I keep hearing of sightings on Finn Hill. We did a story in March about that and subsequently…Read More heard about at least two other sightings, in Houghton and the Evergreen Hill/Totem Lake area, including some photos: http://kirkland.patch.com/groups/around-town/p/hello-bob-bobcats-sighted-twice-recently-in-kirkland

Taken at Houghton Beach Kevin, looking at the Seattle skyline during sunset. The crop doesn't work…Read More as well as we had hoped though!

I went to the Kiwanis pancake breakfast this morning, and it was great! I got there in time to see…Read More both the jazz ensemble, and part of the young children's choir. Both were amazingly good, despite their age.
I hope to attend next year if they have it.

Interesting developments, don't you think?
1) School districts may self-select, but non-school…Read More districts must go through the commission.
2) Since 2014 will be year two of the five year program to authorize forty charter schools, would it not be possible to choose sixteen charter schools?
3) It will be interesting to see what proportion of applications are rejected. It is reasonable to presume at least some will be inadequately prepared for the task.
4) KIPP, Rocketship, and Aspire schools got a leg up from Robin Lake's presentation, which lauded their work.

According to the FAQ on the State Board of Education charter site, "The five-year
period…Read More begins with the first year in which there have been charter schools operating for a full school year." So I suppose only a maximum of eight applications will be granted in the first round.

Readers, I would love to hear your thoughts! Congratulations on having the hearts to adopt, by the…Read More way. Thanks again Patty!

My grandkids love any park with a play area, their favorite is at Saint Edward State Park on Finn…Read More Hill, but they enjoy Juanita Beach and Houghton Beach too!

The fabulous KCLS also has GREAT toddler/preschool library times that are free! they often includes…Read More a story, music, sometimes an activity like coloring. Bookstores like Barnes and Noble also offer story times as well, sometimes with a free treat. Don't forget about toy stores, Bellevue Toy and Frame has wonderful free art lessons and story time for toddlers/preschoolers in the morning too!
Don't discount outdoor play! My boys and I love going to playgrounds and parks, even if it's raining. Just gear up! The Parks and Recs department has a WONDERFUL website where you can check to see if is a playground/picnic shelter/tennis courts/etc. near you: http://myparksandrecreation.com/default.aspx
Also, the non-profit organisation KaBOOM.org does a playground challenge every summer, we did it last summer for six weeks (go to playgrounds and play!) that is also super fun. (http://mapofplay.kaboom.org/summer-challenge)
we did the challenge last summer (http://blog.anportraits.com/2012/08/02/go-outside-and-play-seattle-area-childrens-photographer/) and were one of the winners of a FREE TRIP to Washington, D.C.!

Thanks for all the great ideas Alex! We'll have to give the playground challenge a try!

Could you tell I was a little peeved, Dan? Seriously, I absolutely agree about that Sacramento plan.…Read More So many holes it's ridiculous. It will be interesting to see how H/B/N will respond. They're successful billionaires for a reason. I'm assuming helplessly losing out on an investment isn't one of them.
Mark Hoppen May 1, 2013 at 10:19 am
I'm with you Brent, except in one respect. Perhaps the Sonics would have stayed in Seattle if…Read More leadership, both Wasington State and Seattle, had generated a committed vision for a stadium. At the time, our local capacity for action was nil. Sacramento, today, has generated a serious, committed effort in an incredibly short time led by a mayor. Imagine that! So, noting that distinction, Howard, David, and even Clay, are kind of absolved. The threshold criterion in Stern's mind is the will to act on an arena. In that sense, he appears consistent. As for Howard, on one hand he appears to have had his one great imaginative idea when he opened the latte site. Hansen, on the other hand, is a creative generator. I still think a team will emerge, if not now, relatively soon, say within two years.
Karen Olson May 1, 2013 at 12:29 pm
I am so pleased and appreciative of this terrific group, led by our wonderfully focused Chris…Read More Hansen-you are keeping our hearts, souls, and dreams alive for our future NBA Basketball Team!! We will persevere! No fear-even if it is a few years off-this may be just a warm up for the final steps necessary to bring our Sonics Home!!! They are coming! One of your biggest fan and supporter!! Years ago my cousin lived in Seattle for a while. His observation about major league sports then…Read More was that Seattle would never truly be a big-league sports town because there is just too much to do around here. Skiing, boating, hiking, fishing, flying, climbing, etc., etc. I'm inclined to believe he was correct.

Just watch a Seahawks game and tell me who has better fans than the 12th man!

This is key in the dumbing down of America. We have almost totally lost the ability to disagree and…Read More continue a conversation (let alone a freindship). Good information(true facts) should be of merit in any situation yet with politics, religion, the environment, creationism there is so much bad information (incorrect assumptions and opinions mascarading as facts from news sources that consider incorrect assumptions and opinions as facts) that has been ingrained as good information many times the learning curve is too ballistic to even attempt a verbal solution. I suggest good books and hope the person will get a new perspective from a non-threatening source.

Once upon a time there used to be "Truth" with a capital "T"
Everybody knew it,…Read More agreed that it was so, and navigated their lives accordingly. Kind of like an internal spiritual GPS.
But at the same time we are well aware of human capacity for recording truth.
Who can argue, after a dozen years of CSI television programming, that anyone has a handle on any Truth?
People are confusing "occurring reality" with "the Truth".
They are not the same.
What most of us call reality is more of an opinion than truth.
Occurring reality is our belief about the data in view, how it came to be that way, and how we expect it to go in the future.
Subjective reality is not synonymous with Truth.
In relationships this is toxic.
