USTA AWARDS $7,500 MULTICULTURAL EXCELLENCE PROGRAM GRANT TO NORTHWEST HIGH PERFORMANCE TENNIS OF KIRKLAND

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., April 3, 2014 – The USTA today announced that it has awarded a $7,500 Multicultural Excellence Program Grant to Northwest High Performance Tennis (NWHPT) of Kirkland, Wash. The funds are designed to support competitive junior development programs that are training youngsters aspiring to achieve national and/or international rankings.

“Northwest High Performance Tennis is truly deserving of this year’s Multicultural Excellence Program Grant,” said D.A. Abrams, Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer, USTA. “We are glad to have a program like this that not only stays mission-focused on developing talented players, but also plays a major role in positively impacting their surrounding communities. With tennis at the helm, they are certain to remain thriving with successful impacts and outcomes.”

As a recipient of the Multicultural Excellence Grant for the second consecutive year, the funds will help to provide opportunities for kids in the Pacific Northwest area so they can compete at a high level, as well as provide grassroots initiatives throughout the Kirkland community.  NWHPT has been part of the community for over six years, and in that time, has been one of the most successful programs in the country. The facility has produced five No. 1 ranked U.S. players, 38 sectional titlists and 24 sectional finalists, and players who have gone on to compete on the professional circuit. In addition, they have developed a partnership with TOPS (Tennis Outreach Programs) to provide educational tutoring services and tennis equipment for the organization’s underserved and low-income participants.
