PATCH PICKS: Oscar Drama is Upon Us

Here's how to celebrate like a star.

Hollywood’s biggest celebration of the year is coming up Sunday, when actors and directors hobnob in priceless jewels and haute couture gowns, patting each other on the back for their amazing ability to pretend that they are someone else.

And we, the royal subjects, plunk ourselves down on our sofas for several hours of vicarious fame and intermittent boredom when “What’shisname” thanks everyone from his kindergarten teacher to the guy that details his car.

There is something about the Oscars that piques our collective curiosity.

  • Did two women show up in the same dress? How mortifying!
  • Did the hunky lead actor grow a crazy beard? What was he thinking!?
  • Was that James Franco driving Jesse Eisenberg’s limo? That guy really does it all!

Patch is here to help all your Oscar dreams come true.

SEE THE FILMS: Most years when the Oscars roll around I feel good if I’ve seen half of the movies nominated for Best Picture. This year I’m batting three for ten, having only heard of eight. And though I’ll be renting the films from the comfort of my Apple TV, I realize there are people out there who still go out and rent actual DVD’s. Your best option is to head to Blockbuster on Old Redmond Rd. in South Rose Hill or on 98th Ave. NE in Juanita.

DRESS LIKE A STAR: Kirkland is home to a bevvy of boutique consignment stores swimming with once-worn gowns. Though many scream “bridesmaid” hidden designer gems are waiting for just the right buyer. Check out  and Serendipity, or Forget Me Not Consignments near Juanita.

ATTEND A PARTY: Hang out with fellow local film buffs at an Oscar party like this public event posted on Facebook. The party starts at 5 p.m.; bring your own tiara.

PLAN YOUR OWN PARTY: Did you know that The Purple Cafe in Kirkland is fully “rent-able?” From the cellar (17-20 people) to the full buy-out (up to 150 people), Purple is a great place for a party!

RENT A LIMO: Sure, the stars arrive on the red carpet in a limo, but why not watch the show on a TV inside of a limo? Elite Limousine’s fleet comes equipped with an in-car TV, stereo, mood lighting and ice for the bottle of bubbly you bring along.
