Hollywood’s biggest celebration of the year is coming up Sunday, when actors and directors hobnob in priceless jewels and haute couture gowns, patting each other on the back for their amazing ability to pretend that they are someone else.
And we, the royal subjects, plunk ourselves down on our sofas for several hours of vicarious fame and intermittent boredom when “What’shisname” thanks everyone from his kindergarten teacher to the guy that details his car.

SEE THE FILMS: Most years when the Oscars roll around I feel good if I’ve seen half of the movies nominated for Best Picture. This year I’m batting three for ten, having only heard of eight. And though I’ll be renting the films from the comfort of my Apple TV, I realize there are people out there who still go out and rent actual DVD’s.
