Redmond Market Returns This Weekend; Kirkland Markets Start May 13 and June 1

Opening day will feature a full line-up of special events and festivities.

Dozens of farmers and artisans will descend on Redmond this weekend as the Redmond Saturday Market kicks off its 36th season. The market, which bills itself as the Eastside's oldest farmers' market, will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Saturday through Oct. 29 at 7730 Leary Way NE.

Dick Watson, vice president of the market's board of trustees and a local wood-turner, said approximately 130 vendors will rotate through the site's 91 stalls this season. Early-season visitors can expect a more craft-heavy mix of vendors for the next few weeks, Watson said.

"Then as the crops come in, the farmers kind of edge out the crafts people," he said.

In Kirkland, the Juanita Friday Market at will open May 13, while the Kirkland Wednesday Market downtown kicks off June 1.

The popularity of the Redmond Saturday Market among vendors has continued to grow, Watson said, and all sellers must adhere to several restrictions. For example, all food must be grown or produced in the state of Washington, and all crafts or other items must be hand-made in the state, he said.

Most of the farmers who sell at the market are also certified organic, Watson said.

In addition to fresh produce and homemade goods, opening day will feature several special events, including a ribbon cutting ceremony with Redmond Mayor John Marchione, a performance by the  pep band, children's activities and more.

Throughout the season, the market will continue to host special events, including chef demos, zuchini races and pet adoptions. Click  for a complete schedule.
