'Portlandia' Star Carrie Brownstein Recalls Redmond Childhood

Redmond native Carrie Brownstein, the musician and actress currently starring in the hit TV show Portlandia, reflected on her formative years during a recent feature article in The Seattle Times.

Brownstein grew up in the Country Creek neighborhood, playing soccer and performing in school plays. She told the Times' Paul de Barros that transferring from Kirkland's to  was a major turning point in her adolescense.

"I traded my Doc Marten boots for L.L. Bean duck shoes," she says, flashing one of her irresistible, Mary Tyler Moore-wide smiles. "I went preppy. Which, in reality, was much more my true nature."

Brownstein, first known for her role in punk-rock band Sleater-Kinney, currently stars with Saturday Night Live's Fred Armisen in Portlandia, a show on the IFC network that spoofs many of the Pacific Northwest's quirks. She also plays in the Portland band Wild Flag.
