Black Friday Blues? Local Shops Participating in Small Business Saturday

The holiday shopping promotion is an effort to encourage shoppers not to bypass Main Street on the way to the mega-mall.

You say you ain’t no shopaholic and you've got the Black Friday blues? Well, lots of shops in Kirkland will open their arms to you this weekend during Small Business Saturday.

Conceived by American Express to help spotlight the efforts of local small businesses, Small Business Saturday encourages shoppers not to bypass Main Street for the mega-mall.

Out front in this effort among Kirkland’s small businesses as usual is the irrepressible entrepreneur and owner of on Park Lane downtown, Suraphong “A” Liengboonlertchai.

He is also active in the 3/50 Project, an effort to promote the independent business upon which America was founded.

“We are small businesess and we want to help each other and the economy,” he says. “Like the 350 Project says, if you buy local you help the economy a big amount. For every dollar you spend at a small business, 68 percent of it goes back locally. But if you spend it at a big box store, only 18 percent, and if you buy on-line, zero percent.”

As part of Small Business Saturday, Liengboonlertchai is giving away a Simplicity Décor Limited Edition 5th Saturday Savings Bag to the first 100 customers who visit the store.  Shoppers will also get a 20 percent off on all holiday ornaments.

The savings bag celebrates the home decor shop’s fifth anniversary and is a reusable bag customers can purchase and bring in on every fifth Saturday of a month to receive 20 percent off on anything they can fit in the bag.

This event also kickstarts the store’s 2011 holiday saving promotions that will run every weekend until Dec. 18. The shop will be open Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
