Mom's Day Treats and Eats

Pamper your mom at home or out and about with these Kirkland favorites.

MAY'S SECOND SUNDAY is the day set aside to celebrate our moms -- the beautiful, hard-working women who brought us into this world and, against all odds, kept us alive for a couple decades until we could manage on our own.

I’ve held the “mom” title for nearly 10 years now, and have been celebrated with a variety of styles. Breakfast in bed? Sure, but don’t wake me up too early. A lovely brunch at my favorite restaurant? Great, especially if you hired a babysitter. A gourmet picnic lunch on a warm spring day with space for the kids to run free? Now we’re talking.

From my decade of experience, I take away one overarching principle -- one day per year is not nearly enough time to thank a mother for all she does! So, however you like to celebrate, you had better make the day count.

Out To Brunch

Reservations are getting scarce, but there are a few spots open for you late planners. Here are some brunch-y options for indulging your mother:

Family Friendly With A Flight --

Sometimes too many menu choices are overwhelming. Purple is offering a deliciously edited brunch menu with kicked up classics like a crab cake Benedict and a Greek yogurt fruit parfait. No Purple meal would be complete without a “flight” -- in this case, a flight of mimosas including orange, cranberry, grapefruit and peach juices topped with sparkling wine. Only a couple of reservations left, so don’t wait.

Itialiano Style --

Enjoy brunch with your mama thanks to Lucia owner Mike Halter's mama -- the amazing woman behind Lucia's delicious recipes. Try a ricotta/chive scramble or Nutella French toast with a build-your-own Bloody Mary or a bottomless mimosa (sorry ladies, there is a two hour time limit on those). Call 425-889-0200 for reservations.

Fancy With A View --

Light bouncing playfully off the lake will lull any mom into a happy mood, especially when she gets a look at Chef Dylan Giordan’s menu. Macrina baked goods and bacon beignets to start, continuing on to Amaretto French toast and duck confit hash, or maybe roasted halibut with English peas and foraged greens. All dishes are also available in smaller child-sized portions. Call 425-803-5595 for reservations.

Casual With A View --

Down the staircase from bin on the lake, Beach Cafe is offering a breakfast buffet from 8 a.m. - 11 p.m. for $20 (adults) and $10 (kids aged 5-12). Choose from an assortment of pastries and fruits, plus things like sausage hash, French toast and made-to-order omelets. Call 425-889-0303 for reservations.

The Buffet Zone --

Similar to its Easter extravaganza, The Crab Cracker is putting on a huge buffet for $36 per adult. Get raw oysters at the cold table, fruit blintzes at the hot table, prime rib at the carving station, plus a pasta and omelette bar. Only a few early reservations still available, so call now -- 425-827-8700.

First Come First Served --

A farm-fresh brunch is available every weekend at Trellis, but on Mother’s Day you don’t need reservations. Brunch will be served from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Even if you don’t get in line the night before, staff say they always manage to seat a lot of people on Mother’s Day. The smoked salmon omelet is definitely worth a little wait in line.

Close To Home

If you think Mom prefers a quieter morning, treat her to a tray of freshly baked cream scones. Other favorite treats of mine include a heavenly cinnamon dolce latte from  or a rich mocha that tastes like real chocolate (not Hershey’s syrup), a ham and cheese croissant from or a still-warm bagel slathered with “shmear” from .

Is it Sunday yet because I just heard my stomach growl! Any tips on how to get my kids to read this list?
