Heads Up: Work to Cause Major Backups on I405 Northbound in Kirkland

Three-mile backups are expected as crews re-stripe the freeway's northbund lanes in Kirkland, beginning Friday night.

Drivers on Interstate 405 northbound this weekend can expect major backups in Kirkland due to a lane-striping project, says the Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT).

Three-mile backups can be expected, according to WSDOT. Work will be underway on the northbound carpool lane in Bellevue as well.

Here are the full details from a WSDOT press alert:

Drivers planning to travel on northbound Interstate 405 this weekend should plan for lane and ramp closures in both Bellevue and Kirkland beginning Friday night. Crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will close the carpool lane in Bellevue around the clock for pavement repair; in Kirkland, crews will close lanes at night to restripe the highway. Both closures are expected to cause delays and backups.

Backups of up to three miles are expected from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, on northbound I-405 in Bellevue.

Closure details:
·         Bellevue - Crews will close the northbound I-405 carpool lane at I-90 for 38 hours, from 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 24, to 11 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 26. Drivers coming from the south are encouraged to use alternative routes, reschedule trips or avoid the area.
·         Kirkland – Crews will close up to three lanes of northbound I-405 between N.E. 85th St. and N.E. 160th St. starting at 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Nearby ramps will also close.

The lane and ramp closures in Kirkland are necessary so crews can restripe northbound I-405 to make way for median work as part of the Bellevue to Lynnwood Widening Project.  Eastside drivers familiar with the area on northbound I-405 between NE 85th Street and NE 160th Street should expect slightly different lane positions during their commute on Monday.

A complete list of lane and ramp closures is available on the I-405 Construction Updates page. Drivers can check real-time traffic conditions on I-405 on WSDOT’s Seattle traffic page at www.wsdot.wa.gov/Traffic/seattle.
