Heritage Society to Honor WWII Service at Wednesday Meeting

The Kirkland Heritage Society is inviting all with memories of the war to attend and share their stories.

Joseph Regan of Kirkland, a Prisoner of War during World War II who was freed by Gen. George Patton’s troops, will tell his intense story during the May meeting Wednesday of the Kirkland Heritage Society.

The public is welcome, and the society is encouraging all WWII veterans and those who spent the war on the home front to share their stories during or after the meeting, which is at Heritage Hall (203 Market St), 7 p.m.

Loita Hawkinson, society president, is hoping after the meeting to record a few minutes of those willing to share their memories of life during the war. She especially would like to hear not only from those who served in the armed forces, but also those who worked at Boeing, the Lake Washington Shipyards at Houghton or the Kirkland Marine Works.

But anyone with memories of the war -- of rationing books, Victory Gardens, those sent to internment camps -- are encouraged to attend. "You are an important part of America's history," Hawkinson says.

Please call the society’s office at Heritage Hall if you have any questions, 425-827-3446.
