STORM UPDATE 6: City Urging Caution Due to Icy Roads

In its sixth storm update since Tuesday, the city of Kirkland says trees are beginning to topple here and there due to the weight of snow and ice. A city crew was sent to clear a downed tree on Juanita Drive at NE 137th Place.

UPDATE, 3:51 p.m., Thursday Jan. 19: The city of Kirkland is cautioning residents that roads remain extremely icy, and noted that several trees have fallen due to the weight of snow and ice, including one on Juanita Drive at NE 137th Place. A city maintenance crew was sent to clear it.

In the city's sixth storm update, it also reported a tree down and blocking a porton of Holmes Point Drive in the 13800 block. Another tree that had blocked the road at NE 38th Place and 108th Avenue NE has been cleared. Kirkland Patch also received a report Wednesday night of a tree that came down on a street in the Kingsgate area, at NE 140th west of 116th Ave NE, narrowly missing several kids out sledding.

Several streets in Kirkland have been closed due to snowy and icy conditions, the city reported Wednesday morning in a storm update, and all waste collection has been canceled for the day.

Streets closed include the steep ones typically blocked in slippery winter conditions, such as those off Market Street between 10th and 19th avenues.

Others closed are:

  • NE 52nd Street between Lake Washington Boulevard and 108th Avenue.
  • NE 97th Street between 112th Avenue NE and 110th Avenue NE.
  • 5th Avenue between Lake Street South and State Street South.
  • 5th Place between 15th Avenue and 18th Avenue is closed.NE 104th Street between 113th Court NE and 111th Avenue NE.
  • NE 116th from 98th Avenue NE to 108th Avenue NE (at McAufliffe Park).
  • 100th Avenue NE between NE 116th Street and 120th Place. Note: This is not the main N/S road in Juanita, but a parallel road one block up the hill to the east.


City and neighborhood meetings scheduled for Wednesday are all closed, including the public workshop about the proposed new Finn Hill Fire Station, which had been planned for 7 p.m. at Finn Hill Junior High.

All recreation classes are canceled. City Hall is open with limited staffing. Peter Kirk Community Center is open until 3 p.m. North Kirkland Community Center, Kirkland Municipal Court and Kirkland Cemetery are all closed.

Waste Management, the city's garbage and recycle service provider, has canceled all its Wednesday routes and will double-up on collection next week.
