Travel to Italy without leaving Kirkland!

Photographs of Rome by University of Washington Design students now on view in Kirkland.

Ahh, summer. It seems that the summer season has slowly snuck up behind me and has suddenly arrived. Sometimes in Washington it’s hard to tell where one season ends and the next begins, especially when the temperature is always somewhere in the 50s and the sky is cloudy. The great news is that, regardless of weather, the summer often brings travel and chances to see artwork in new places. For those of us who might not be traveling far this summer, I suggest using art as a great escape.

Currently hanging at the Kirkland Public Library and the Kirkland Performance Center are photographs of Rome, Italy, by University of Washington Design students.

The photographs displayed at these two sites (which are Kirkland Arts Center satellite exhibition spaces) are a selection of images taken by Design students during a five week intensive “Design program in Rome” course led by Professor Christopher Ozubko and professional photographer Mel Curtis. The program takes place annually as an introduction to the historical sites of Rome.

This class, open to undergraduate and graduate students, allows individuals the chance to make presentations, research, and experience the sights and sounds of the city firsthand. In September, another group of design students will once again take a long flight to Rome (this is the seventh year of the program) and return with photographs that will inspire.

In my mind, I’m already in Italy…
