Marine From Tacoma Dies on Second Tour of Afghanistan

Lance Cpl. Ramon T. Kaipat, 22, died Wednesday while conducting combat operations in the Helmand province.

A U.S. Marine from Tacoma died Wednesday in Afghanistan, according to the Department of Defense.

"Lance Cpl. Ramon T. Kaipat, 22, of Tacoma, Wash., died April 11 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.," the Defense Department said.

The Public Affairs Office at Camp Pendleton issued a statement Thursday saying it is mourning Kaipat's death.

Kaipat enlisted in the Marine Corps on September 22, 2008. This was his second deployment to Afghanistan.

His decorations include the Purple Heart Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the NATO Medal- ISAF Afghanistan.

"The Marines and sailors of 1st Marine Division mourn the loss of Lance Cpl. Kaipat. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family," according to the statement.
