Lake Washington Musicians Take Sweepstakes Award At WorldStrides Heritage Performance Festival in Vancouver, B.C.

June 5, 2013 -- Lake Washington High School swept the top award at a regional music festival in Vancouver May 24-25 for performances by its band, orchestra and choir groups. The Sweepstakes award is given to the school earning the highest combined scores for its performances. Lake Washington had 160 students performing in 10 music groups. The festival, sponsored by Worldstrides Heritage Performance Programs, featured a total of 53 performing groups from 15 schools in Washington, Oregon, California and British Columbia. LWHS also took the Gold award in its division for performances by the concert choir; Lyrica; Men of Lyrica; string orchestra; concert orchestra; wind ensemble; jazz band; and percussion ensemble. The flute ensemble and symphonic band each took silver medals in their division. Lake Washington students won four of the 12 Maestro awards given for outstanding individual musicianship within an ensemble or group. The winners were Austin Myhre of the Percussion Ensemble,; Holt Maki (trumpet) in Jazz Band; Savannah Brady in Lyrica ; and Daniel Porras in Men of Lyrica. Directors Awards were given for the Wind Ensemble directed by John Logan; and for Lyrica and String Orchestra, directed by Jim Peterson. The concert is free and open to the public. The school is located at 12033 NE 80th St., Kirkland.
