Amber Alert Canceled: Missing Teen Hannah Anderson Safe, Suspect Dead

Police shot James Lee DiMaggio during the rescue of Hannah Anderson in Idaho Saturday, Aug. 10

After reportedly shooting suspected kidnapper and murderer James Lee DiMaggio in Idaho's rugged River of No Return Wilderness, Idaho authorities say Hannah Anderson is safe.

Police have been searching the Idaho wilderness since DiMaggio's car was located Friday, Aug. 9 and a horseback rider saw two people he said matched Anderson and DiMaggio's descriptions. According to media reports and a press conference by San Diego Sheriff Bill Gore, a campsite was spotted Saturday, Aug. 10, from the air, leading police to DiMaggio and Anderson.

Anderson is safe and was to be checked out at a hospital before being reunited with her father Sunday morning.

DiMaggio was suspected of killing Anderson's mother, Christina, and her 8-year-old brother, Ethan, whose body was identified as that of the child found in DiMaggio's burned home in San Diego.

Amber Alerts have been in place since Anderson went missing Aug. 4, and the remains of two people were found in the burned home.
