UPDATE: Good Samaritan Collapses and Dies at Scene of I-405 Accident

David Ward of Kirkland was helping direct traffic around a three-car collision on the 195th on-ramp in Bothell when he suddenly collapsed. He was not involved in the crash.

A Kirkland man who stopped behind a three-car collision on an Interstate 405 on-ramp in Bothell Wednesday evening to help direct traffic collapsed and died for medical reasons that remain uncertain, according to the Washington State Patrol

David Ward, 52, was not involved in the minor collision, but had stopped as a witness to help when he collapsed, said State Trooper Julie Startup.

Ward had stopped his 1994 Ford Ranger behind the collision on the northbound on-ramp to I-405 from NE 195th Street at about 7:15 p.m., and was directing traffic around the accident when he was stricken, Startup said.

Aid personnel were not able to revive him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. There is no known connection between Ward and the original collision, which was a minor accident with no injuries.
