Husband of Bellevue Shooting Victim Speaks Out

Gloria Koch Leonidas's husband, Tom Leonidas, spoke to reporters, including KING 5 News, about his wife, who was a victim in a Seattle shooting spree in May.

Gloria Koch Leonidas, the , was a decisive person who didn't hesitate to do the right thing, her husband, Tom Leonidas, told reporters in a recent interview.

Leonidas was an innocent victim when shooter Ian Stawicki, who had just shot five people at Cafe Racer in Seattle's Ravenna neighborhood, came upon her in a parking lot near Seattle's Town Hall.

Stawicki attacked her, and .

"I understand that at one point she kicked the gun out of his hands and I would have expected nothing less of her," Tom Leonidas told KING 5.

However, Stawicki managed to shoot the mother of two fatally before stealing her Mercedes SUV. Leonidas was the fifth victim who died in the May 30 shootings. A sixth victim survived, and Stawicki shot himself after police tracked him down in West Seattle.

Leonidas , and was active in her daughters' school and on the boards of Kirkland's Evergreen Healthcare Foundation and the  Illuminating Engineering Society of Puget Sound, an association of lighting professionals.

"One of the things that's helped us through this is the fact that we're not grieving alone, and there is a whole city grieving, and we will never truly understand why this happened," Tom Leonidas said in his televised interview with KING 5.

It's truly a tragedy that this woman had to die at the hands of a deranged killer, there is nothing on earth worse than this.
But to then list all the charities the family were involved in and and ask for monetary donations to said charities I find very tacky. Is nothing sacred?
Elizabeth June 10, 2012 at 03:31 pm
Debbie I find your last sentence tacky and heartless. Gloria Koch Leonidas is no longer around to work to earn money to support these charities that were important to her. In lieu of flowers or other gifts, it is being suggested (not demanded) that sympathizers and mourners support her favorite charities in her memory and honor. What is tacky about that? What's tacky is for you to disparage a family in mourning.

I had the wonderful privilege of meeting Gloria. What an amazing person she was! The entire family is warm, genuine and caring! My heart goes out to Gloria's family and to the other four families that lost their loved ones on that tragic day. I cannot even imagine what all the families are going through. May their memories and legacies live on forever. You don't have to donate to the charities if you don't want to. If you do that's great, but no one is obligated to. I think all the articles are very tasteful. God bless all the victims and their families!

Thank you for the comments, Debbie, Elizabeth and Deidre. I think the fact that all three are charities near and dear to Gloria Koch Leonidas makes them worth mentioning. I did not know her, but feel certainly she would want that good work carried on.

I agree with you Elizabeth. Gloria's brother is a dear friend of mine. I know the entire family is mourning. I personally asked how I can help at a time like this. I think it is wonderful to contribute to the charities and family she loved. As Elizabeth mentioned the family is not demanding this nor would they expect anything. That said - for those who wish to contribute now have the information to do so.
Finally, yes Debbie Sterling there are sacred things left. Its the love of family and friends along with the desire to try and help anyway we can, whether it is a hug, a meal or a donation.
