VIDEO: Kirkland Fire Department Conducts Vivid Sprinkler Demonstration

Two pretend rooms were set ablaze to show the effectiveness of sprinklers -- one with and one without.

Two plywood mock rooms were set afire Wednesday at Peter Kirk Park in a demonstration by the Washington Sprinkler Coalition and the Kirkland Fire Department to show the effectiveness of sprinkler systems.

A room without sprinklers was set on fire first and became fully engulfed in flame in less than two minutes before it was extinguished by Kirkland Fire Chief Kevin Nalder and Kirkland City Councilmember Amy Walen, who volunteered to help with the demonstration.

The other room was set on fire and a curtain inside burned for less than 30 seconds before the sprinkler system went off and completely extinguished the fire.
