Firefighters from Redmond, Kirkland, Bellevue, Woodinville, Duvall and Eastside Fire & Rescue tackled a two-alarm blaze on 67th Place, Northeast Union Hill Friday morning, July 12, east of Redmond.

Acting Battalion Chief Jim Strickland said the family was not at home when the fire broke out, but at first firefighters weren't sure if anyone was inside (see video above for Strickland's recounting of the events). Four dogs are ok, but two family cats are still unaccounted for.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Strickland said when firefighters first arrived it was unclear whether anyone was inside but the flames had completely engulfed all but one room in the house. Firefighters took a defensive approach until they could get inside, calling in a second alarm on the fire. Altogether six engines responded to the fire.

Crews remain on the scene putting out the smoldering house, which is a complete loss.

The rural location of the fire in unincorporated King County added to response time, Strickland said. Crews arrived with pumper trucks, but were heartened to find fire hydrants available in the area.
