Kirkland Firefighters Respond to Two Overnight Blazes

The residential fires late last night included one in an 8-unit apartment complex on 133rd Street, and a fire on 80th Avenue NE.

Update, March 15, 7 a.m.: Two significant fire calls came in to the Kirkland Fire Department within six minutes of each other Thursday night, one at an eight-unit apartment complex in Kingsgate, quickly followed by a house fire in the Finn Hill neighborhood, Kirkland Fire Battalion Chief Mike Haschak said.

The first incident, a two-alarm fire on the 13200 block of NE 133rd, came in just after 9 p.m. and included a report of a handicapped person who could not get out of a unit, and multiple reports of flames visible, Haschak said.

Crews from Kirkland, Redmond, and Woodinville arrived to tackle the second-floor blaze and evacuate numerous residents. When crews arrived on the scene, the fire appeared to be concentrated in the kitchen, but the cause of the fire is not yet known. Firefighters were able to hold the blaze to one unit, and were able to get all the other residents of the building back into their homes last night. Haschak said a damage estimate has not been formalized, but there is likely a minimum of $50,000 to the apartment.

Meanwhile, crews were on the way to a Finn Hill house fire, on the 11200 block of 80th Ave NE, where they arrived 14 minutes after the first call came in, Haschak said.

"We broke off some of the units from the apartment fire,Β  since the full two-alarm complement wasn’t needed," he said, and firefighters from Northshore, Bothell, Redmond, and Woodinville arrived to assist.

That fire originated in the home's kitchen and was quickly extinguished, but the exact cause has not been determined yet, Haschak said. One resident of the home had some minor burns to her arm.
