Kirkland Man Gets Jail for Trying to Videotape Juanita Volleyball Players in Restroom

A Kirkland man is serving a 90-day jail sentence after pleading guilty to attempted voyeurism for setting up video cameras in the restroom of a building where members of the Juanita High School girls volleyball team were attending an overnight party last year.

Steven Meeks, 24, began serving the sentence at the King County Jail in August after pleading guilty in July. He was sentenced to 364 days in jail, with all but 90 days suspended, and is allowed work release.

He’ll also face restitution, to be determined at a later date, and must attend a sexual deviancy treatment program and register as a sex offender. After serving his time he will be on probation for two years.

Charging documents indicate Meeks was married to the team's then-assistant coach, and that the warehouse in Woodinville was owned by her father. The team had planned to spend the night at the warehouse on Nov. 5, 2011, for a slumber party that was not sanctioned by the school.

The team left the warehouse after one member spotted a camera in the ceiling of the women’s restroom while she was using the toilet, and police were called. Charging documents indicate that only the coach, her mother, Meeks and the team knew about the party, which was to have no male participants, and that Meeks had access to the facility.

The court documents state that when King County Sheriff’s Office detectives confronted Meeks, he ultimately confessed and admitted to setting up the camera for his sexual gratification. But he claimed that he had intended to “spy” on a co-worker he knew would be using the restroom the following Monday.

A sentencing report filed with King County Superior Court indicates Meeks also admitted setting up video cameras in the bedroom of some of his in-laws.
