KPD BLOTTER: Scuffle over Sternoff Campaign Signs Prompts Police Response

Other recent cases include a beer bottle assault, cash theft from purses at a downtown restaurant and an extremely intoxicated reckless driver.

The following are selected case reports from the for the period of Sept. 29-Oct. 4.



Sept. 29

  • An 18-year-old Kirkland man was arrested on an aggravated assault charge just before midnight after allegedly striking a 20-year-old Kirkland man in the head with a beer bottle, causing a wound that required stitches. The assault occurred in the 300 block of Kirkland Avenue downtown.

  • Police investigated an evening disturbance about campaign signs at an intersection along NE 90th Street on north Rose Hill involving two Kirkland men 47 and 57 years old and a Kirkland woman 57 years old. Two of the parties involved work for City Councilman ’s re-election campaign and allegedly saw the third party remove signs. A verbal and physical altercation ensued, according to the case report, and police found both sides equally responsible. No arrests were made, but the case was forwarded to the city prosecutor for review.


Oct. 1

  • A 33-year-old Seattle man who was identified as a shoplifting suspect was stopped in the parking lot on NE 132nd in north Juanita and arrested on charges of theft and unlawful possession of a weapon. The man was found with merchandise he had not paid for, as well as a .22 caliber revolver, but no concealed weapons permit. The incident occurred at about 7:30 p.m.
  • After trying to pick a fight with a crowd outside ’s bar on Kirkland Avenue downtown at 1:30 in the morning, and then taking a swing at an officer, a 24-year-old Kirkland man was subdued and arrested for disorderly conduct.

Oct. 2

  • After being seen by employees and guests at the downtown taking money from the purses of customers in the hotel’s restaurant , a 52-year-old Kirkland man was arrested for third-degree theft. The man was arrested at about 6:45 p.m. and allegedly took $158. One victim was listed, a 66-year-old woman from Yarrow Point. The man was taken to the police station, booked and released.


Oct. 3

  • Police arrested a 34-year-old Juanita man for assault after he allegedly made unwanted sexual advances on his former roommate, a 35-year-old Kirkland woman. The incident at about 10 a.m. occurred at a residence in the 9900 block of NE 119th in Juanita. The victim told police she told the man no and he continued his advances, and police say he admitted to making them.


Oct. 4

  • A 62-year-old Kirkland woman who allegedly was driving recklessly and was stopped by a witness in the /Rite Aid parking lot on NE 132nd in north Juanita was arrested for driving under the influence at about noon. The woman, who lives nearby, refused a breath test at the scene, but tests later at the police station found her blood alcohol level at more than three times the legal limit, .285. She was cleared by medics and refused to go to the hospital. The witness who stopped her was a 35-year-old Kirkland woman.
