Unattended Candle Ignites Mattress in Bridle Trails Area Home

An unattended candle next to a bed caused smoke damage throughout a Bridle Trails area home, the Bellevue Fire Department reported Tuesday night.

At 6:10 p.m. Tuesday evening, the owner of a two-story residence in the 4100 block of 140th Ave NE called 911 to report a fire in their downstairs bedroom, according to a press release from the Bellevue Fire Department. Fire units arrived in less than six minutes to find the home filled with smoke.

Firefighters from Bellevue and Redmond worked to quickly remove a smoldering mattress and box spring from the home, according to the press release. An unattended candle left next to a mattress was the cause of the fire.

The residents are working with their insurance company to find temporary housing during repairs, according to the press release. No estimate of the damage was made. No injuries were reported.

According to the National Candle Association, U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission suggested that 85 percent of candle fires could be avoided if consumers followed three basic safety rules:

--Never leave a burning candle unattended.

--Never burn a candle on or near anything that might catch fire.

--Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets.
