VIDEO: Volunteers Help Kids in Need Get Ready for School

About 25 Eastside children from low-income families went on a back-to-school shopping spree Tuesday morning at the Redmond Target.

Getting ready to go back to school is an exciting time of the year for most kids. Along with all the possibilities of new friends and fresh experiences, most children also get to enjoy some new clothes and school supplies.

But for kids from low-income families, not having new clothing for the start of school can be a source of stress that causes them to struggle academically, says Lt. Sierra Dwell of the Salvation Army's Eastside offices in Bellevue. In order to help kids start school on the right foot, the organization has teamed up with Target to give kids from around the region a "Back to School Shopping Spree" at one of 12 local Target stores.

On Tuesday, 25 children from around the Eastside received $80 gift cards from Target to spend on new shoes, clothing and other basic items at the . Volunteers from the , , Kirkland Fire Department and other groups helped the kids pick out what they needed and kept track of their purchases.

The children all participate in the Salvation Army's after-school or summer camp programs, and their parents applied for the assistance.

Redmond Police Officer Kim Corbray has volunteered at the event once before and said she enjoys helping the kids because she grew up in a low-income household and benefited from similar programs as a child.

"As an adult, it's just awesome to give back to the community," Corbray said.
