Habib, a Democrat, and Myers, a Republican, are the only people who have filed for the seat, but because of the state's top-two primary system, they will both be on the August primary ballot and the November general election ballot.

The 48th Legislative District includes Medina, Bellevue and parts of Kirkland and Redmond.

Habib said in a news release that he has raised more than $115,000 and gained endorsements from 48th Legislative District incumbents Sen. Rodney Tom and Rep. Ross Hunter, the League of Education Voters, Kirkland Firefighters and the Washington State Association of Nurses.

“We quietly raised funds and earned the support of leaders and organizations throughout the winter and spring,” Habib sad in a prepared statement. “The outpouring of support from across the political spectrum and from friends and neighbors on the Eastside is incredible. We are hitting the ground running for a competitive election season."

Habib grew up on the Eastside and graduated from Bellevue schools, but went to Yale Law School and was a Rhodes Scholar. He works for Perkins Coie, where he helps establish technology firms.

Habib has been blind since he lost his sight to a rare form of cancer when he was 8 years old, according to his campaign website.

Habib says his past civic experience includes serving as the Bellevue Human Rights Commissioner, a trustee of the Bellevue College Foundation, and on the board of the Bellevue Downtown Association. Habib has testified before the U.S. Congress on issues important to the disabled community and helps raise funds for Overlake Hospital.
