Don't Forget: State Route 520 Complete Closure Scheduled for This Weekend

City of Kirkland and WSDOT are reminding drivers and urging them to prepare for gridlock.

The City of Kirkland and state transportation officials are reminding drivers about the upcoming closure of the State Route 520 bridge, which has the potential to cause gridlock throughout this busy Father's Day Weekend.

The closure, which will involve both directions of 520 traffic between Interstate 405 and Montlake Boulevard, will begin at 11 p.m. on Friday, June 17, and continue until 5 a.m. on Monday, June 20. Approximately 166,000 vehicles travel across the 520 bridge on a typical summer weekend, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT).

During the closure, crews will construct new fish passage culverts under the bridge, remove a pedestrian bridge in preparation for future projects, install a new barrier, and perform routine maintenance such as re-striping and pothole filling.

WSDOT asks that drivers avoid discretionary trips during the closure, carpool and use transit. The agency plans for six additional weekend 520 closures through the end of the year, with the next closure planned for a weekend in July.
