Forty-Two Youth Hoops Players Receive 'Steve Hale Sportsmanship Award'

The award honors those demonstrating sportsmanship and a positive attitude, in memory of the Kirkland parks director.

Forty-two Kirkland youth basketball players and one team -- the mighty “Sprites” -- have been selected by league coaches as the first recipients of the Steve Hale Sportsmanship Award.

The award is presented in memory of Stephen “Steve” Hale, Kirkland’s parks director from 1956-64 and the founding father of the city’s youth basketball league. A player from each team in the league was selected for exemplifying outstanding sportsmanship, team play and a positive attitude throughout the 2012 season.

Hale served as a coach, umpire and referee for many sports for 25 years in Kirkland, developing and expanding youth sports and facilities through volunteerism. He emphasized teamwork, fundamentals, self development, hustle, sportsmanship -- and above all, having fun.
