Houghton Community Council Seeks Volunteers to Write Pro, Con Ballot Statements

The deadline to apply for the consideration for the committees to argue for and against continuation of the Community Council is Friday, Aug. 2.

The following is a press release from the city of Kirkland.

Kirkland, WA – As state law requires every four years, residents of the Houghton neighborhood in Kirkland, Washington must vote on whether the community council will continue to exist.  The Houghton Community Council is recruiting interested residents to formulate the “Pro” and “Con” statements that will appear in the King County Elections voters’ pamphlet for the General Election ballot.  One committee will prepare the statement in favor of; and one committee will prepare the statement against, the ballot measure.  The ballot will state “Shall the Houghton Community Municipal Corporation be continued in existence for another four years?”  Interested residents should contact the Kirkland City Clerk’s Office at 425-587-3190 or email KAnderson@kirklandwa.gov no later than 4:30 p.m. on August 2, 2013. Committee members will be appointed by the Houghton Community Council at a special meeting to be held on August 5, 2013 at 7 p.m., Kirkland City Hall, 123 Fifth Avenue.

The Committees, which will consist of no more than three members each, will be formed to prepare arguments which are limited to 200 words.  The “Statement For” and the “Statement Against” (in addition to rebuttals of the opposing statements) will appear in the King County Local Voters’ Pamphlet for the November 5, 2013 General Election.  Arguments must be submitted by the Committees to King County Elections no later than 4:30 p.m. on August 15, 2013.

Arguments prepared by the “Pro” and “Con” committees will be made available by King County Elections to the opposing committees for rebuttal after 4:30 p.m., August 16, 2013, and statements rebutting (optional) the argument made by the opposition shall be submitted no later than 4:30 p.m., August 19, 2013.
