Today: Join 'Kirkland 2035' to Get Involved in Major Planning Efforts

The city is seeking greater input as it embarks on several major plan updates and studies, including on the Cross Kirkland Corridor, Juanita Drive, parks and open space and transportation.

The city of Kirkland will launch at a June 8 event a campaign to involve the public on several major upcoming planning efforts, including on the Cross Kirkland Corridor, the city’s Comprehensive Plan, Parks Plan and a study of the Juanita Drive corridor.

The campaign is called “Kirkland 2035: Your Voice. Your Vision. Your Future,” and will begin with a “Planning Day” on Saturday, June 8, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at City Hall.

The event will include a one-hour “crash course” on the state’s Growth Management Act and how the city’s Comprehensive Plan is designed under the act to guide growth over the next 20 years -- from 2015 to 2035.

The Comprehensive Plan will be updated beginning this year, along with Transportation Plan folded within. At the same time several related planning updates will soon begin, including master plans for the former Burlington Northern railway through town now known as the Cross Kirkland Corridor and Surface Water Management.

Others includes a study of how best to manage Juanita Drive, much of which was incorporated into the city with the annexation of Finn Hill in 2011, and a Parks, Recreation and Open Space Plan, which will help guide the city in using revenues of the Parks levy approved by voters last year.

As part of the parks planning effort, on June 1 the Parks & Community Services Department will host an outdoor workshop to gather input on the future of Totem Lake Park. The city hopes to develop Totem Lake Park as part of its drive to economically improve the Totem Lake Business District, including the nearby Totem Lake Malls property. That event will begin at 10 a.m. June 1 at 12031 NE Totem Lake Way, in the parking lot of Yuppy Pawn Shop.

Another part of the effort will take place during the Juanita Friday Market on June 7 (3-7 p.m.) when the city Public Works Department hosts a “Walk and Roll” Safety Fair. It’s at Juanita Beach Park, 9703 NE Juanita Drive and will showcase city programs to support pedestrian and bicycle safety.  Activities include a bike rodeo, bike safety clinic and games.

Finally, one June 12, a community hands-on workshop will be held on the Juanita Drive Master Plan Corridor Study where residents can help identify traffic, pedestrian, and bicycle safety issues along Juanita Drive between Juanita Village and the northern city limits in the Finn Hill neighborhood. Its from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Finn Hill Middle School, 8040 NE 132nd Street.
