PREVIOUS ELECTED OFFICE(S):

Elected: To Kirkland City Council in 2003; Re-elected to Kirkland City Council in 2007

Other campaigns for public office: None

THIS CAMPAIGN:

What is the primary reason you are running for this office?

To help make annexation successful for all Kirkland citizens, to continue my record of fiscal responsibility by promoting value for your tax dollar and maintaining a sustainable budget, to maintain our quality of life, and to be an advocate for Kirkland citizens.

What will be your top three priorities if you get elected and why?

1.  ANNEXATION: Make annexation successful for all Kirkland citizens. Annexation has allowed us to welcome 30,000 new citizens to Kirkland. Our challenge now is to make annexation financially successful and to integrate our new citizens and neighborhoods into Kirkland so they can enjoy the “Kirkland Quality of Life”. The temporary sales tax credit from the state of Washington made annexation possible and allows us to balance our budget and provide service to the annexation area. The sales tax credit lasts for 10 years. We have to figure out how to balance our budget without it before it goes away. Kirkland has a long tradition of fiscal responsibility and I want to make sure that continues.

2.   PUBLIC SAFETY: Maintain priority funding for public safety. Kirkland is safe and Kirkland citizens feel safe. Our high standards of public safety are the foundation of our quality of life. Maintaining high standards of public safety is a challenge in these tough economic times, but I am committed to making sure we make public safety a priority.

3.  ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT: Promote a thriving business environment that creates jobs. A successful economic development strategy that retains current business and helps it succeed and attracts new businesses and jobs to Kirkland is our best strategy for maintaining our quality of life, level of service, balancing our City budget, and benefiting our citizens in these challenging economic times. Kirkland has a very productive business climate and a wonderful quality of life. We can use our assets to attract community compatible businesses to Kirkland and help all of our businesses prosper.

What sets you apart from the other candidates and/or previous office holders?

My campaign theme is Experienced, Dedicated, Independent: A Common Sense Approach to Good Government. I have the experience, dedication to Kirkland, history of public service, skills and expertise to make that a reality.

I am an experienced Kirkland City Council member with financial and budget expertise. I serve as the Chair of the Kirkland Finance Committee, and on the Economic Development Committee, the Housing Committee, and the Disability Board. I have served on the Metropolitan Solid Waste Management Advisory Committee, the county-wide solid waste planning group, for seven years and have been the Chair for three years.

I have almost 25 years of experience serving the Kirkland community. I served on the Park Board and the Planning Commission, and I helped found the South Rose Hill – Bridle Trails Neighborhood Association and served as its President for the first four years. I have served on many citizen and community committees and task forces. I am a successful business owner with a background in finance. I have years of experience talking with citizens, listening to citizens, and serving Kirkland citizens.

I believe in open, transparent, and responsive government. I believe citizens have a right to unlimited access to information about their local government and that they are entitled to a say in decisions made by local government. I respect public process and am committed to open and forthright discussion of issues.

I love living in Kirkland and I believe it is the best place in the world to live. My commitment is to preserving our quality of life, our level of public service, our high standards of public safety, our environment, parks and natural areas.

Endorsements:

I am endorsed by the Washington Conservation Voters, Sierra Club, Cascade Bicycle Club, Washington Women’s Political Caucus, and many neighborhood, community, and business leaders and elected officials. I look forward to another opportunity to serve Kirkland.
