Peter Kirk Park Playground Being Replaced

Crews begin removing worn-out facility built in the 1990s.

A city parks crew has begun replacing the aging but popular playground at Peter Kirk Park in downtown Kirkland, tearing out the facility installed in the 1990s to clear the area for a new one.

The new facility (see the attached PDF file) should be installed and hosting laughing, playing children in early March, said Kari Page, the City of Kirkland's neighborhood services coordinator.

The older playground had become worn out and was becoming unsafe.

The city's park system maintains 24 playgrounds, which last 12 to 17 years, depending on the type of materials used and the condtions at each location.

Two are replaced each year. The next scheduled for replacement is the popular "blue" playground at Houghton Beach, as children often refer to its because of its color. That project will began this spring or early summer.
