Remember the Quake 10 Years Ago Today?

Things you might like to know today, Monday, Feb. 28, 2011.

  • It’s been 10 years to the day since the "Nisqually" earthquake rocked the Puget Sound area at 10:54 a.m. The quake measured at magnitude 6.8, one of the largest in recorded Washington history. The epicenter was 32 miles under Anderson Island, but tremors were felt as far away as Vancouver, Canada, and Pasco, Washington. No deaths were reported, but the quake caused significant damage and served as a vivid reminder that we live in an active earthquake zone. It's an appropriate time to freshen up on King County's earthquake preparedness pages and specifics on preparing an emergency kit.
  • The sun rises at 6:52 a.m. on this last day of February, and sets at 5:52 p.m.
  • The Houghton Community Council meets tonight at 7 p.m. in City Hall. On the agenda is the Eastside Rail Corridor interest statement, green codes and the Lakeview neighborhood plan code amendments.
  • Just a reminder to all you green thumbs. Tomorrow, March 1, applications are due for local community Pea Patches. The City of Kirkland facilitates three gardens, including Tot Lot Pea Patch, Ohde Pea Patch and McAuliffe Park Pea Patch. First Fruits is hosted by Lake Washington United Methodist Church.
