Traffic Alert: New Sidewalk Going in at Peter Kirk Elementary

Work starts this week to add 780 feet of sidewalk on the north side of 12th Ave. between 6th and 110th Ave. NE.

Construction of a new sidewalk at along the north side of 12th Ave. will begin this week, and the city of Kirkland is advising drivers and neighbors to expect some inconvenience.

The project is designed to provide a safe way for kids to walk to school and will add about 780 linear feet of curb, gutter and sidewalk along 12th Ave. from 6th St. to the back school entrance on 110th Ave. NE.

Construction hours will be 7 a.m.-6 p.m. weekdays. During work hours, traffic may be delayed through the work zone. Traffic control and flagging operations will be in effect. Expect restricted parking along the roadway.

The project is expected to be completed by the start of the new school year in September.

The project includes a five-foot wide pervious concrete sidewalk  -- which allows water to drain through -- and a 4.5-foot planter strip between the sidewalk and the traffic lane. There will also be a new boardwalk, and new vegetation planted around the wetland at the east end of 12th Ave.

Reed Trucking and Excavating of Puyallup was awarded the contract for the project by the city. For project updates, see the city of Kirkland web pages here or contact Kari Page, Neighborhood Outreach Coordinator at 425-587-3011 orkpage@kirklandwa.gov.
