Want to Be a Kirkland Council Member? Applications Due by April 9

The City Council plans to conduct public interviews and appoint a new member on Tuesday, April 16.

The City of Kirkland is accepting applications through April 9, 2013 from eligible applicants for the City Council Position No. 2. Position No. 2 was vacated on March 25, 2013 due to the resignation of Bob Sternoff.

as the candidate filing period for the upcoming election is May 13-17, if the person selected chooses to file for election to fill the remainder of Sternoff's term.

Several people are already showing interest in the position, including Robert Style, who sent an email to the Council expressing interest, and Jon Pascal, who launched a Facebook Page promoting his selection to fill Sternoff's term.

After a Tuesday night council discussion, the city posted the following information about the job on its Website Wednesday:

If you are interested in applying, please carefully read the information below, learn more about the roles and responsibilities of the City Council, and submit a completed application form.

Minimum Requirements
To be eligible, you must have lived in Kirkland city limits for 12 months before the date of the Primary Election scheduled for August 6, 2013. You must also be a King County registered voter.

Position No. 2
The City Council is Kirkland’s governing body and is comprised of seven non-partisan members who are elected by the registered voters of Kirkland to serve “at large” (not representing a district or ward).

The appointed Council Member for Position No. 2 will serve until the 2013 November General Election is certified. If the person appointed by the Kirkland City Council to Position No. 2 stands for election and wins, he/she will continue to serve in Position No. 2. If another person is elected, the person elected will take office when the election is certified by the King County Elections Office and would serve through December 31, 2015, which is the remainder of the unexpired term.

The General Election is scheduled for Tuesday, November 5, 2013. Certification typically occurs near the end of November.

Applications must be received in person or via email (kanderson@kirklandwa.gov) by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9, 2013. The City Clerk’s Office is located at Kirkland City Hall, 123 Fifth Avenue, Kirkland, WA 98033. City Hall office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • April 9, 2013: Applications are due to the City Clerk by 5 p.m.; not postmarked. (Read above)
  • April 15, 2013: The City Council will hold a special meeting to review the applications and determine the candidates to be interviewed.  (Tenative meeting time: 6 p.m.)  Meeting Room: Peter Kirk Room.
  • April 16, 2013: Interviews will be conducted during a Special Meeting to begin at 4:30 p.m. Applicants selected for interviews must be available in the evening. The City Council will make the appointment during the Regular Meeting. The Regular Meeting begins at approximately 7:30 p.m. Meeting Room: Council Chamber.

The appointment must be made by a majority vote of the remaining Council Members.
All City Council meetings will be held at Kirkland City Hall, 123 Fifth Avenue, Kirkland, WA 98033. City Council meeting agendas are posted online and can be received via email by subscribing to the list serv.
