Eglington Won't Run for Re-Election to LWSD School Board

Sammamish resident Doug Eglington will step down from the Lake Washington School District School Board at the end of 2013.

Doug Eglington, a member of the Lake Washington School District Board of Directors since 1989, announced Thursday that he will not run for an additional term.

Eglington served as board president in 2005 and 2006 and was first appointed in February, 1989, to fulfill a partial term and was then elected in November 1989. He is a resident of Sammamish and lives in the district’s Director District Four. His current term on the school board will end in December of this year.

Eglington, who retired two years ago from a career in government policy work, noted that his wife, an Issaquah School District teacher, is getting closer to retirement age.

"It’s time for a change,” he said. "I will miss working with my fellow school board members but am confident Lake Washington School District is in good hands."

"Doug was on the board when I was first elected,” noted Jackie Pendergrass, president of the Lake Washington School District Board of Directors. “His constant, knowledgeable presence has helped our board keep the best interests of students in mind. Doug has been invaluable to all of us by staying current on and tracking both state and federal legislation that could affect our district. We could be sure as a school board that we knew what legislation might affect the district and could think ahead. We will miss him very much."

"By the end of his final term, Doug will have served the district for close to 25 years,” noted Dr. Traci Pierce, Superintendent. “A strong and stable school board is invaluable to any school district. Doug has contributed so much to the district throughout his years of service and I will greatly miss working with him."

Before his retirement, Eglington was a senior policy analyst for the King County Office of Business Relations and Economic Development. He was employed in government policy work for over 27 years. Eglington serves on the board of the King County Directors' Association for the purchasing of school supplies. He is a past Golden Acorn winner from Samantha Smith Elementary School PTSA. Eglington serves as an education representative for the KCTS Channel 9 community advisory board. He is also active as a member of the Washington State School Directors Association legislative committee.

Eglington’s seat on the school board will be open as a result of his retirement. Interested candidates must live in Director District Four and file with King County Elections by May 17.
