Kangs Clip Islanders 12-11 in 11 Innings

Chris Moore hits a walk-off RBI single as Lake Washington scores three runs in the final frame of a crazy game.

’s Chris Moore hit a walk-off single in the 11th inning to cap a wild 12-11 victory over powerful Mercer Island at in Kirkland Friday night, the Kangs twice rallying with the game on the line.

Lake Washington scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings, then three more in the 11th to win.

“I’m really proud of them,” said LW coach Derek Bingham. “We were down five runs on two occasions against a top-10 team. We showed some resiliency, and that experience is just a boon for us going forward.”

Moore went 2-for-5 at the plate with four RBIs, and Victor Mayorquin had a big night as well, going 4-for-7 with a two-run double in the critical seventh.

Bingham also credited pitchers Bob Cruikshank and Duke Fanning, who both threw three scoreless innings in relief.

“It was a good game to show our mettle,” Bingham said. “We had chances to win in the eighth, ninth and 10th with guys in scoring position, but just couldn’t get them home.”

Mercer Island (4-2, 0-1 KingCo 3A/2A) scored two runs in the top of the 11th to take the lead before the Kang rally to win.

“It was a wild game,” Bingham said. “Kind of par for the course at PK (Peter Kirk Park). Seems like we have one game a year that’s like that there.”

Zach Johnson went 2-for-6 at the plate with two RBIs as the Kangs belted 14 hits.

Mercer Island had 13 hits, with Evan Thompson going 3-for-6 with an RBI, David Oppenheim 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBIs and Cameron Ogard 2-for-6 with two RBIs.

Lake Washington evened its record on the season at 4-4, but is now 2-0 in conference play. The Kangs play Liberty in Renton today (Saturday) before a big game against city rival Juanita Monday night at Peter Kirk, 7 p.m.
