Kangs Power Hitter Theo Alexander Has Eyes on the Major League Draft

Lake Washington's athletic outfielder is already drawing the attention of pro and college scouts.

Name, age: Theo Alexander, 16.

School and Neighborhood: Theo will be a senior at in the fall. He lives on Rose Hill.

Accomplishments: An outfielder and power hitter for Lake Washington High School’s varsity baseball team, Theo is a potential major league prospect who has already caught the eye of college and pro scouts.

In early August, Theo took part in the Area Code Baseball Games in Long Beach, CA. The Area Code Games bring top high school talent together for a weeklong tournament that sees them swing real wooden bats and wear the hats of big league clubs. Theo played under the banner of the Kansas City Royals.

The Area Code Games gave Theo a chance to measure himself against other top players from around the country, and let him display his talents for pro scouts from every major league organization.

“It was exciting playing with kids that are the exact same skill level as me,” Theo says.

There were approximately 200 pro scouts at every game and Theo relished the attention. “It feels good,” he says. “I like it.”

Key to awesomeness: Theo started playing t-ball when he was a kid and moved up the Little League ranks. He used to pitch and play some first base when he was younger, but soon established himself as a much better hitter and outfielder. He played centerfield for the Kangs last season.

“My hitting was a lot better than my pitching,” Theo says.

Theo – who bats left and throws right – has established himself as a potent power hitter. He’s currently working to spread his power all over the field. “Just working on my swing and getting stronger as a hitter,” he says.

Theo figures large in LW baseball coach Derek Bingham's plans for the 2012 season.

"Theo is a very talented player who has been a big factor in our success," says Bingham, whose Kangs reached the state playoffs earlier this year. "We're counting on him to be one of the seniors who will lead us back to where we were last two years."

Bingham says Theo's biggest attribute is his overall athleticism.

"He is one of the better athletes, if not the best athlete, in the (KingCo 3A) Conference in terms of strength, speed and ability. He's got a lot of power. He's a good kid. He understands it takes hard work.

"I think this summer he's really opened some eyes in the area about how good he could be."

Theo has played varsity ball for three years and plays every day, even when there’s no school. During the off-season he plays for various select leagues, giving him a chance to continue to improve.

Aside from hitting, Theo wants to improve his defensive skills, particularly his throwing arm.

“My arm’s okay, but I could make it a lot better,” he says.

Going into his senior year, Theo is hoping to enter the 2012 Major League Draft. He’s also considering playing college ball at top programs like Oregon, Long Beach State and UCLA.

Theo says community college is also an option that could quickly lead to getting drafted, and said Edmonds CC or Bellevue College interest him.

No matter where he goes, Theo just wants to play ball.

“I just love playing the game so much.”
