Kirkland's Environmental School to be Honored in 'Earth Heroes' Ceremony

The school, part of the Finn Hill Junior High complex, engages students in the environment through outings and stewardship projects.

Kirkland’s (EAS) is one of two schools in the Lake Washington District that will be honored by King County at the annual “Earth Heroes at School” ceremony April 26.

Students, staff and parents from “EAS,” part of the newly modernized complex, and Margaret Mead Elementary in Sammamish will be among those honored by King County Executive Dow Constantine. The Earth Heroes ceremony will be at Maplewood Greens in Renton, 4050 Maple Valley Hwy., Renton, at 4:30 p.m.

This year the program will recognize one student, three student groups, four school programs, eight teachers and seven other school employees.

“These stewards of the environment are our heroes – for conserving resources, protecting the environment and spreading the word about sustainable practices,” Constantine said in a press release. “I am proud to recognize them for their hands-on commitment to the planet.”

EAS engages students in the environment through regular outings, as well as its Community Stewardship Projects. Students are divided into 10 different project areas three times a year. Examples include building a nature trail boardwalk, removing invasive plant species, teaching elementary students about habitat, educating the community on the effects of pollution.
