Strong LW Dance Team State-Bound, to Perform Wednesday in Kirkland

The Lake Washington team reached state competition with strong performances at the district level earlier this month and will perform for the public Wednesday at the high school.

The traditionally strong Dance Team twisted and twirled into state competition in all three categories at districts earlier this month and now has its toes pointed toward a goal this weekend.

“We’re hoping to go out and do our best,” says Coach Lindsey Beck, a former LW Dance Team member herself. “The girls’ goal is to bring home trophies in all three routines.”

The WIAA state AAA dance competition is on Saturday at the Yakima Sundome. But first the team will generate some hometown buzz with a performance for family and friends on Wednesday, March 21, 7:30 p.m., at the new Lake Washington High gym. The event is free, open to the public and refreshments will be served.

The team advanced to state in all three categories -- pom, kick and military -- during district competition at Bothell on March 10. They were expected to do that and did the same last year, but felt their performances were strong.

“We’ve been working really hard since May with a goal of making it, and we were really excited,” says Beck. “We got good feedback from the judges.”

Last year, the team earned the state pom title, and finished third in the other two categories. The challenge now is to improve on that. “As a coach, I think they’re strong in all three,” says Beck. “It’s really going to come down to the day, and which teams have the best performances.”

The 32 team members -- sophomores, juniors and seniors -- have been working hard, practicing and analyzing.

“We reflect and look at ourselves and what we can do to improve,” says Beck. “Our No. 1 goal is to do our best.”
