LWSD Reports 9-Point Gain in SAT Math Scores, Slight Drop in Reading and Writing

Superintendent Traci Pierce attributed the math improvements to more classroom focus in that subject area.

Students in the Lake Washington School District's (LWSD) class of 2012 made significant gains in the math portion of the SAT college admissions test, the district announced Monday.

According to a LWSD news release, members of the class of 2012 who took the test scored, on average, nine points higher than their counterparts in the class of 2011.

Average reading and writing scores, meanwhile, declined by 2 and 3 points, respectively. The release pointed out that LWSD scores in these areas continue to be significantly higher than state and national averages, which also declined between the two cohorts.

Superintendent Dr. Traci Pierce attributed the math increase to enhanced classroom focus in that area.

“The focus on improving math scores in many of our schools is having an effect,” Pierce said in the news release. “Strong math scores will ensure that students are ready for postsecondary work.”

The news follows an August announcement that a record number of district students had met benchmarks on the ACT, another standardized test intended to measure college readiness.

The number of LWSD students taking the SAT rose from 1,205 in 2010 to 1,212 in 2011—the highest number in the past five years, the district said. Those taking the ACT totaled 485 in 2012, up from 421 in 2011.
