Boys Baseball: LW Whips Mercer Island 6-2 to Keep Season Alive

Kangs will play Bishop Blanchet on Tuesday, with the winner earning a berth in the state playoffs.

The baseball team exploded for four runs in the bottom of the second inning and ran away with a 6-2 victory Saturday over Mercer Island at Bannerwod Park in Bellevue, keeping its season alive.

The Kangs now face the Metro League’s Bishop Blanchet High Tuesday at 7:15 p.m., again at Bannerwood, with the winner moving on to the state playoffs.

Chris Moore provided a large share of the Kangs offense, with three hits in four at-bats, including a double, and driving in two runs. Stevie Semler went 2-for-2. Kory Kohlwes and Nori Shimizu both went 1-for-3 with a run each. Victor Mayorquin went 1-for-2 with a run.

Zach Johnson pitched six innings for the win, giving up six hits, two runs and striking out three. He also had two RBIs in four at-bats. Duke Fanning closed it with a scoreless seventh, striking out one.

Mercer Island’s David Oppenheim went 3-for-4 at the plate with a homer.

It was a significant victory for Lake Washington, which suffered a disappointing 1-0 loss in eight innings to Mount Si Friday in the KingCo 3A championship game.
