LW's Bernstein Brothers Named All-State in Lacrosse

Jake and Cody Bernstein helped lead the Lake Washington High lacrosse team to the playoffs. Jake also earned All-American honors.

Name, age: Jake Bernstein, 18, and Cody Bernstein, 17.

School and neighborhood: Jake is a senior at and Cody is a junior at . They live in the Bridle Trails  neighborhood.

Accomplishments: Jake and Cody Bernstein helped lead Lake Washington High School’s lacrosse team to the state playoffs in the program’s first year of D1 competition. The Kangs lost in the first round to King's Way last week. But in recognition of their skills, Jake and Cody were named to the first team All-State, and Jake was named an All-American. The two each had several multiple-goal games.

Being named an All-American humbled Jake. “It was incredible,” he said.

Jake had never given any consideration to making the All-America team, but said the honor was the cherry on top of a great season.

Cody was surprised to make the All State team, and was particularly happy to share the honor with his brother.

“That was what meant the most to me,” said Cody.

Their parents are understandably proud as well.

“They just love the sport,” said Julie Bernstein, Jake and Cody’s mother. “The accolades they’ve received are just awesome.”

Key to awesomeness: Both brothers were attracted to the physicality and speed of lacrosse. They’d played other sports before, but soon focused on just the one.

“Baseball just wasn’t fast enough for me,” said Jake, who got into the sport first. Cody followed along shortly.

Both Jake and Cody credit their success to hard work and great support from coaches and family. Having to work harder than everyone else was especially true for Cody, who admits to not being the most gifted athlete on the field.

“I think working hard has definitely been a big key,” said Cody.

Jake appreciated that the whole team worked hard during the season, leading to their tremendous success.

“Everyone was getting involved,” said Jake.

Jake will be attending Dominican University in California next year where he will continue to play lacrosse.

“I will always have lacrosse with me,” said Jake.

Cody has also started thinking about college and is considering several different schools. He has an interest in studying law or psychology.
