With its arms stretched across the US and Canada, Safeway today has more than 1,700 locations. Birthed by M.B. Skaggs of American Falls, Idaho in 1915, Safeway's business strategy was built around keeping a narrow profit margin in order to pass the savings to the customer. Ten years later, it has nearly 800 stores across the US. During the Great Depression, Safeway Stores continued to be pioneers of the industry, introducing by-the-pound pricing on produce, opening and expiration dates on perishables and nutritional labeling.
