I am 68 years old, and a '63 graduate from LWHS.
I have more, or less dedicated a large room in my…Read More
home to audio/video media, both old and new.
There one would find two reel to reel tape decks,
cassette tape decks and even an eight track recorder.
I have over 1200 LP records, plus some old 78s that
date back as far as 1910. I have several record
turntables and one of the newest ones is a linear
track model. The newest turntable is one that has
a USB interface that will allow conversion of my
records to digital for storage on hard drive in one
of my computers. Eventually, I hope to have
converted all of my audio and video to digital.
There is software available that would restore
some of the harmonics and ambiance found on
tapes and records.
As to video, I have a VHS/SVHS camera and a
newer digital Sony camcorder. My audio/visual
system has a VHS/SVHS record/playback deck.
The audio/video system is capable of 8.1 audio
sound and I have plans to upgrade to 9.2 when
it becomes viable.
The video display part can use a 26" CRT TV or
a 55" high definition flat screen.
I have several older computers, a couple of which
predate the original IBM PC. Some of them use
a GEOS, or GEM graphic user interface that
predated MS Windows, and were actually superior
to Windows---The problem was that they ran under
a DOS shell, but that is another story in, and of
itself. I have also built state of the art desktop
computers for my family, and myself. The newest
computers run on Windows 7 Professional, or
Windows 7 Ultimate.
Windows 8 is not in my plans for future builds.
My computers also allow me to watch Blu-ray on
the audio/video system or one of the stand
alone flat screen TVs
We still have and use 35mm cameras in addition
to our digital cameras.
Each member of the family has their own cell
phone, but we still maintain a land line.
The home that I live in is subject to large
area power outages that make cell coverage
iffy, if not non-existent. Ergo the land line is still
a very viable means of communication.
Trying to keep the best of the past, while still
trying to keep up with current technology.
Moore's law means that I will never completely
catch up, but I have fun trying

Congratulations Amy !!
As the GSM of Ford/Hyundai of Kirkland the team and I could not be more…Read More proud of you and your accomplishments. The work you do for our city and community combined with the tremendous job you do here at work is simply amazing. Thank you so very much!

Amazing. Do we ever feel sold out. Citizens deprived of oppty to participate in Section 8 discussion…Read More because we were not noticed - not even through the neighborhood chairs. However the Kirkland Interfaith Transitions in Housing folks were at the council meeting - all well informed. So go ahead, sell out the right of due process for the citizenry and earn yourself some shiny medal. Think of those you sold out when you accept applause.

What an honor for Amy Walen to receive this award. Her untiring energy in supporting Evergreen…Read More Hospital, other non-profit organizations and the Kirkland Community is so wonderful to follow. Mary Lou Walen, Mother-in-Law

That's cool, Kathi, Jennifer and Jim, it's awesome to be able to see native wildlife inside…Read More Kirkland! I am adding another shot of the three deer.
Greg Johnston (Editor) May 28, 2013 at 09:01 pm
Kathi, I keep hearing of sightings on Finn Hill. We did a story in March about that and subsequently…Read More heard about at least two other sightings, in Houghton and the Evergreen Hill/Totem Lake area, including some photos: http://kirkland.patch.com/groups/around-town/p/hello-bob-bobcats-sighted-twice-recently-in-kirkland

How is this going to work?
I live on a dead end residential street. The speed limit is 25mph, which…Read More is a bit fast. Cars scream up and down the hill at 35mph+ (especially that guy in the white Ford pickup!)
How will reposting the speed limit to 20mph or lower help? If the cars are already screaming by at much higher speeds, a new sign won't mean squat.
The only thing I see that works is speed bumps - and most neighborhoods would not like them. Nor do bicycle riders.

My favorite places to ride are on the trails at Saint Eds and Big Finn, road riding scares me. But I…Read More agree with Art, the city needs to come up with a plan for Juanita Drive and mark those shoulder lanes. I also agree with Lisa, I am looking forward to the corridor as a trail -- and that will happen.
Caron LeMay May 14, 2013 at 01:06 pm
My favorite place to ride is all around on Rose Hill, and down to Houghton, then back up again!
Caron LeMay May 14, 2013 at 02:22 pm
" road riding scares me" - rightly so! I'm with you, Greg.
Safety comes down to 2…Read More things: volume of traffic, and above all, SPEED. 95% of people walking/biking survive a collision with a car traveling at 20mph, but only 15% survive collisions in which driver speed was 40mph.
http://kirklandgreenways.org/resources/research-reports/
I'll take the less-travelled, lower-speed neighborhood streets to connect to where I want to go!

I love those pictures, Kevin! Thanks so much for sharing!

Matt McCauley, LOL, quoting from The Fifth Dimension song. :) Thanks for the information. It really…Read More is too bad Bellevue has the microfilm and not Kirkland.
Kevin, thanks for sharing the pics. That is pretty cool...although still sad. But people have to make money. I hope the new owners take great care of it. There is a cute little log cabin at Kelsey Creek Park. It would be nice in a place where people could enjoy it. :)
Greg Johnston (Editor) April 18, 2013 at 08:23 pm
I'm glad about that too Pam, but sad this cool little remnant of the old Kirkland many of us have…Read More known for so long has to be moved. I guess time ticks on, the A&W on Market is gone, the old Kirkland Junior High burned down, the Flame faded away and so on...

My grandma's house that was nearby on 2nd was torn down a few years ago for new construction. Sad…Read More when you can't go back and still see childhood memories, but at least there are photos. I am curious where this cabin's new location will be. Just a couple years ago I took a walk on Market and checked it out so I at least saw it one more time.

I remember me and my friends having one of our parents drive us to Redmond from Kirkland and drop us…Read More off for the day to watch the races. Don't remember but probably walked into tiny Redmond and found a phone booth to call and let them know we were ready to be picked up. The races were exciting and noisy. I still refer to it as "The Slough" and always will regardless if some have no idea what I'm talking about:)
Greg Johnston (Editor) April 6, 2013 at 01:27 pm
Me too Jeff, it'll always be 'the Slough." My dad caught some nice steelhead in the Slough…Read More before it was diked and channelized. The races were always a blast.
