Considering the fact that many of the students in the "Leadership Class" are the same onesRead More involved in May Madness, this solution is a joke and shows just how interested the administration at JHS is in actually addresseng this. How disappointing.

For anyone with questions this is the school districts cyber bullying policy:Read More http://www.k12.wa.us/SafetyCenter/InternetSafety/default.aspx Things to note: Girls on this list do not choose to be on this list and have no say in having someone vote over them based on their looks. This list contains a "losers" bracket. At many points this lists falls into "electronic name-calling, shunning and shaming" which based on their the school's own policy "are all forms of cyberbullying." Many Juanita students have gone to their teachers and administrators over issues regarding this list that have come up during school hours (this was also sited by Seattle Times report). These include gossip, hurt feelings, fights between friends which both fits the definition of bullying and "disrupts the orderly operation of school" which allows the school to become involved. One may think this is a case of boy being boys. But school should be a safe environment for all. Kirkland made the national news for this just this morning. Is this what you want your town to be known for?

This is disgusting, and school administrators should be ashamed at themselves for making excuses andRead More allowing this to continue, particularly for a school district that claims to have launched a large anti-bullying initiative. The Facebook page is currently "friended" by boys whose names (and even employers) are clearly visible to anyone who bothers to look. Not exactly anonymous as the school claims. Regardless of where they are posting this information from, as far as I am concerned rating of students on the singular reason of hotness consists of online bullying, and the students involved should be expelled. On the plus side they've given my "hot" daughter a good idea of who not to date. Now that more and more colleges are looking at Facebook pages it will be interesting to see what the colleges think of these students online activity since the high school does not seem to care.

I think this is interesting. But of course, if your parents can't get you to the non-home school,Read More then you can't choose. And it looks like the more expensive programs are in the schools where the average family income is higher. Not equal access really.

Why is ICS the 2nd best? Are the teachers really better than other teachers in the Lake WashingtonRead More School District or around the state? There are factors that have nothing to do with the quality of teaching. Very few of the students have parents that never went to college. Very few of the students qualify for the free lunch program. Very few of the students are homeless. Very few of the students didn't go to preschool or have extracurricular activities like music, dance, and sports when they were younger. Almost all of these students have internet access where they live, dependable transportation, a parent that cares for them, healthy food at home, a heated house, a warm jacket when they need it and the availability of public libraries. Most of them receive routine medical care. It is hard to rank ICS on how well it educates its black, Hispanic and economically disadvantaged students because the percentage of students that fall into these categories is so slim. Students that are in danger of failing a course can leave ICS and enroll in their neighborhood high school instead. In other schools parents don't have the money to pay dues or the freedom to volunteer hours. I applaud the students for working hard and the teachers for doing an excellent job. But let us be realistic. Most of the seniors already ranked in the top 25% in their grade level in the Lake Washington School District when they entered the school in 7th grade.

Congratulations to Juanita Elementary and the other nine Lake Washington Schools who won awards. InRead More this era of constant attacks upon public education, it is reassuring to know our public schools are doing well. I hope this news release will be featured in the print media, as well.

I suppose we can deduce from these numbers that the decrease in teen depression and suicidalRead More ideation corresponds with an increase in smoking, drinking, using drugs, and having sex.
AC March 17, 2013 at 06:46 pm
It is interesting that 10th graders show higher rates of depression and suicidal thoughts than theRead More 12th graders. I wonder if that is usually the case or if it correlates with with some outside influence, such as war, 9/11 or economy, during an important milestone in their lives.

Good news about tobacco use. I do find it depressing that teens consider marijuana use less riskyRead More while thoughts of suicide are going up. Studies have shown a direct correlation of marijuana addiction to depression and suicide.
