Thank you, Ken. Yes, indeed, we all can change student (and other) outcomes and we must. I lookRead More forward to reading your blog next week. In the meantime, let's fund education and other vital community services like healthcare, public transportation, enviroment, infrastructure, etc. How? Expect all of us with incomes and other resources to give our fair share. Tax me! Ask me to volunteer. Teach me and the entire community about the benefits of investment in education.

Jeanne: The comment you selected was part of ETS's quoted statement, not my own. I agree with youRead More about the role of income. It was a component of several of the other factors about which I posted. It's usually referenced as being eligible for free or reduced lunch, since that's a federally identified statistic that must be reported. Reporting facts relating to ethnically identified statistics is in no way a "racial issue"; it's just fact. The work currently being done in Washington state with Student Improvement Grants in 27 schools has proved that with sufficient funds and the right focus, we can change to outcomes.

I am surprised to read in your blog that "data on trends by family income are notRead More available" when so many of the factors you list are directly connected with income level. Income is connected with everything from hours parents are available to participate in school events to availability of technology to access to medical care. The income disparities in our communities are serious causes of so many issues. Let's address income disparity and stop making this a racial issue.

Really interesting post, Amie. Here's something Issaquah High School does (I'm imagining it'sRead More administered by the school, not students) that is kind of the flip side of this sort of unchecked anonymous behavior. http://www.facebook.com/IssaquahHighCompliments?fref=pb&hc_location=profile_browser

Hopelink's actions mandating Section 8 housing went too far. Sorry, you are off our list ofRead More organizations to support even though the support before was robust. City council listened to organized carpetbaggers and not the citizens they are sworn to represent. All that can be replaced need to go at the next election Hopelink needs to find folks to contribute who have not been done wrong by this organization.
