Halloween in Kirkland

Hello Kirkland, I wanted to pipe in about Halloween. Definitely one of my favorite holidays. That is, if we want to call it a holiday. I do by the way.

HELLO KIRKLAND, I wanted to pipe in about Halloween -- definitely one of my favorite holidays. That is, if we want to call it a holiday. I do by the way. I remember growing up in the Kingsgate area, now a newly annexed part of our land called Kirkland.

We loved Halloween. We had a ton ton of kids on the block. Right about Labor Day we started to plan our Halloween costumes. Now this is the late '70s so keep in mind that we mostly made our costumes. I have many a memory of my sainted mother helping me into a mummy or witch costumes only to have me rip it off because it "looked dumb." Yikes, my poor mother!

We walked from about one minute after it got dark until like 3 in the morning. Or so we thought. We were all one big pack. It was so fun and man did we haul in the loot. I do have a sweet memory of one of the neighborhood dads driving behind us to keep an eye on us in our late elementary early jinior high years. Also he would honk his horn to let know if we missed a house and holler out "Go get that house!

He sure didn't want us to miss any loot. Can't imagine doing that now! I think in Kirkland we have many super cool opportunities for Halloween fun as a kid. First of all, with an elementary kid, we need to make sure we trick or treat in a housing development that has homes 6-12 inches apart. Then their little legs don't have to go so far to get good loot. Not hard to find in Kirkland, I suggest near downtown Kirkland and perhaps the Houghton area.

Also parents please, please don't make the kid wear a freaking coat over the costume. I know they are cold...but it is only for an hour or so and man does a coat look dorky over a super cool Spiderman costume. My children would be all apalled by this comment, as I was the biggest coat proponent of them all.

Oh and as far as candy goes, please please don't hand out toothbrushes. The BIG candy bars are the best, but we are in a tough economy so the kids will understand the fun size as the most popular! Now as far as the tween and teenagers, be nice to them. If they arrive at your house, please don't say "You look a little big to be trcik or treating."

Geez, life is too serious, let them go on a fun night of free candy one more time. Be sure to dress for the weather as it will rain for sure. Have a wonderful Halloween -- I intend to!
