Kirkland addresses public art decorations with new policy

A new administrative policy allows public art to be decorated as long as the decorations do not damage the artwork, are displayed for one week only, and removed by the person(s) responsible for decorating.  The policy prohibits decorations that paint, scrape, scuff, or in any way, mark or damage public art.  Further, decorations may not be used for commercial messaging or may not pose a dangerous distraction to motorists or pedestrians.  Decorations deemed not to comply with the policy can be removed by the City.  In response to concerns in favor of and in opposition to decorations on public art in Kirkland, the concept of such a policy was considered by the Kirkland Cultural Arts Commission on February 19, 2014.  On February 21, 2014, the Kirkland City Council reviewed the administrative policy.
