Bellevue police say that a man was hit with pepper spray as he answered the door at hisi residnce when a group of people tried to enter his home Tuesday afternoon.
Bellevue police released a sketch of one of the people involved Thursday and are asking the public's help in locating anyone who might have been involved in the attempted robbery.
According to a police department press release, about 4:10 p.m. on Tuesday May 29, a black newer model SUV was parked in the 14400 block of Northeast 14th Place in the Highlands neighborhood when two men and three women exited the vehicle and walked into the cul-de-sac.
Witnesses told police that the group of five was racially mixed with one black man, one white man and at least one white woman. The descriptions of the other two women were unavailable.
A nearby resident became suspicious of the group and confronted one of the women asking what they were doing in the neighborhoodm, according to police. The woman, described as white, replied back in a rude manner and three of the five people proceeded to a nearby home, police said.
One of the women, who was described as white, and one of the men, who was described as black, approached a home and banged on the front door while covering the peep hole so the homeowner could not look outside, police said.
A man inside the home asked who was at the door and woman told him to open it, police said. The man partially opened the door and was sprayed with pepper spray, according to police.
The victim screamed in pain which alerted the home owner’s dog, police said. The man attempted to force the door open and block the door from being closed but became frightened when the barking dog charged the door, police said.
The victim was able to close and lock the door and the neighbor called 9-1-1. All suspects fled the scene in the black SUV, police said.
The victim and witnesses were able to describe three of the suspects:
1. White female with red hair, 19-24, 5’7”, 140 to 150 Lbs.
Clothing: Multi colored sweatshirt with hoodie.
2. Black male, mid 20’s, 5’10”, 170 Lbs.
Clothing: Black sweatshirt with hoodie.
3. White male with light blonde hair, unknown age, 5’7”, 130 to 140 Lbs.
Clothing: Green long sleeved t-shirt, grey cotton shorts to the knees.
The victim met with the Bellevue Police Department sketch artist and police on Thursday released a sketch of the woman who came to the door. If anyone recognizes this person, please call 9-1-1 immediately, police said.
Crime Prevention Tips:
1. Do not open your door to unknown people.
2. Always verbally answer to let the person at the door know that someone is home.
3. Teach your children not to open the door but to answer verbally when they are by themselves.
4. Phone 9-1-1 if you are suspicious of the contact.
