Click It Or Ticket: State Patrol, KPD Plan Nighttime Seat Belt Patrols

Emphasis patrol will be May 22 through June 5 -- get caught without being buckled up and pay up to $124.

Seat belts save lives, as one popular public safety saying goes.

The Washington State Patrol, Kirkland Police Department and other local law enforcement agencies hope to spread that message through nighttime seat belt patrol from May 22 through June 5.

Although a seat belt ticket carries a maximum ticket of $124 for the driver's first offense in Washington state, the reminder just may save a life or two.

Washington state is among 31 states, in addition to the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands that have primary seat belt laws, which means an officer can pull over a driver for not wearing a seat belt. Eighteen states have secondary laws, where officers may only issue a seat belt ticket to drivers who commit another traffic offense.

The Kirkland Police Department will be among more than 100 Washington state law enforcement agencies that will participate in the nighttime patrols.
